Automatic Software Update Service: Install

With each new TFW software product you'll receive an email from FolderShare (from the TFW account at FolderShare, actually).  It invites you to install FolderShare and gives instructions.

FolderShare can be puzzling.  They use odd terminology.  Even computer people find it odd.  Here's what your email invitation looks like, and how to sidestep the puzzlement:

Subject: Invitation from support@TrimFitWell.com

Dear bigbadbob@emailjunction.net:

cerium (support@TrimFitWell.com) has invited you to access files in the FolderShare library TFW_Attendance.

FolderShare is an always-on service that moves your files simply and securely over networks and the Internet. With FolderShare software installed on your computer, you can have your files anywhere.

You can access these files by downloading and installing the FolderShare software by clicking on the link below. Choose to either Open or Run the program, and you'll start the automatic installer.

FolderShare is a simple, secure, lightweight application that has no Spyware or Adware.

Once installation is complete, the files will download to a new folder on your Desktop. To open these files, double click the placeholder file (designated .p2p), and the actual file will download.

Easy, hunh?

Here's the translation:

Click that link to install FolderShare on your computer.  Make a new update folder for your latest TFW software.  Make a new folder.  Don't reuse a folder.  Make a new folder for each new TFW software product.  This update folder is different from the folder where your TFW software is installed.  Don't point FolderShare at a folder you already have, or already use for something else.  Make a new folder each time.

Put the new folder on your desktop if you prefer.  You don't need to.  You'll never have trouble finding this folder.  FolderShare will take you to it whenever you need it.

If your TFW product is called TFW Payments, for example, call the new folder Update TFW Payments or something.  No one but you will care.

FolderShare will then fill that folder with program update files from TFW.  You'll always find the latest version of your TFW product there (so long as you give FolderShare some Internet time of its own).

You'll see a blue F in the system tray (lower right corner of screen, near clock, usually) when FolderShare is running.  It will flash dark blue when it's bringing you files.

Click the blue F to get a FolderShare menu.  Each of your update folders (one per TFW product) are listed there.  You'll click one to open its update folder.

On the FolderShare menu, click More, and click Settings.  On the General tab, turn on all the checkboxes, beginning with "Run FolderShare when your computer starts".

FolderShare can do many other things, but that's all you need for Automatic Software Updates from TFW.

Common Mistakes

 1) You want a new folder for your TFW Automatic Software Updates (a new folder for each TFW software product).  Don't point FolderShare at the folder where your TFW software is already installed, such as

   c:\Program Files\Cerium\TFW Payments

If you make this mistake, neither FolderShare nor TFW will work.  This can be repaired, but you'll probably need live help and lose some time.

2) If you use FolderShare for other purposes, such as keeping files matching on two or more of your own computers, give FolderShare the same logon for each of your computers, and use the FolderShare "Sync My Folders" option.

For TFW Automatic Software Updates you used the Share With Friends option.  For this, you use the Sync My Folders option.

Don't give each of your computers a different FolderShare logon.  I made this mistake.  For some reason I assumed you couldn't logon the same way at the same time from two different computers!  But with FolderShare, that's just what you want.

If you give each of your computers a different FolderShare logon, you look like different people to FolderShare, and FolderShare can only connect you using the Share With Friends option.  For "Sync My Folders", FolderShare needs to know that you are one person with more than one computer.

Puzzling Terminology

For some reason, FolderShare calls the folder a "device" and the contents a "library".  Or maybe the "device" is one computer.  You have one library folder per computer anyhow.  After setup, you no longer need this terminology.
