Automatic Software Updates: FolderShare Questions
Q: When Foldershare is doing its automatic update thing, can you tell me why data is being both sent and received?
I look at my dial-up connection status and I see ...it never stops, it seems to be constantly updating, and with my antiquated dial-up, slows down anything else I want to do on the internet.
A: I had the same question for them at the beginning. It alarmed me. We issue software updates from here, and I had to know why those would be going from you to someone else, or worse yet, from you to another of our TFW computers here. I told them I wanted one-way outbound, and nothing coming back.
I understand it now. If you turn on your computer and you don't have the latest files, FolderShare gets them for you from the nearest location it can find, which could be your friend's location across town or a stranger's across the continent.
You always get the latest. They never write over your newer files with someone's older files. But they might get your updates from her rather than from TFW, if she has them already, and she's closer. Make sense?
That could easily be a burden to your dial-up connection. I suggest you turn off FolderShare until you plan to update TFW. If you click the blue-and-yellow F by the clock, you can select Shutdown until then.
